Burrhead's method is Ok, except: 1. It won't work if the 6V battery is completely dead; there will be no power to the ignition system. 2. It is not necesssary to disconnect the alternator if jumping directly to the starter, especially if the engine on the "good" vehicle is not running. If it could damage the alternator, none of the tractors with 12V conversions/6V starters would work. Also, be careful when jumping directly to the starter; if the tractor is in gear it could start up and run someone over.
John Ne--I think you have some typos; you only mention the negative connection and say nothing about the positive.
