To spray large parts by rattle can will take much more than you think. First, the paint coats need to be pretty thin and dry time is extended on spray can paint. On a typical tractor fender you could expect to use 6 cans or more to get the same thickness of paint as being shot on by spray equipment. Secondly, the over spray problem with spray cans is pretty large. You'll have to cover everything or spray outside. Even then the drift is a problem. If you had even a little cheap Harbor Freight HVLP gun on a nail gun compressor you could shoot liquid paint easily. The results would much better and the learning curve wouldn't be an issue. Besides, by the time you buy enough rattle cans you could easily buy a HVLP gun. If you wanted to stay on the cheap, just buy Rustolum liquid paint and thin it a little.
