Unless I'm seriously missing something I don't see why there should be anywhere near 2K in labor, even in a dealer shop. If he's talking about a hydro, I can see that. An axle. No. Not by half. If it's outside warranty, find someone local and it should be done cheaper yet. This is not a D9 we're talking about. Any of those compact's I've worked on can be substantially stripped in a few hours.
For me, 1200 for a casting or 900 to repair is a no-brainer where I do the work myself. I'm buying the new casting supposing I had absolute faith in the repair, which I quite honestly don't. Perhaps you have great experiences with it, but it's not something I could ever trust.
