They are cheaper for the first few months to a year after they open in a new location then they are anything but competitive. If they stay cheap then it's to drive a competitor out of business locally. I have to agree with those that say it's the public's appetite for cheap products that fuel this. It's always easier for someone to swallow somebody else getting screwed over trying to make a living than having done to themselves. I think it is because of general ignorance versus conspiracy that this goes on. I wish some of the people that preach the "new" economics would get hosed over in situations like that. There is a consequence to sending so much money out of a local economy nevermind the US. If people want to go back to what it was like 100+ years ago (no middle class and very little upward mobility), then keep on talking up WalMart. People need to go see some of the communities where there was little prosperity before and then WalMart sucked the life out of it.
