I think on a flat pulling track too much tire doesn't work for the light weights,3500 - 6500# most of the time. I pull with 16.9x28 in the farm stock 6500 and 7500 classes and have taken 1st in both for the past four years. But, I only pull at my home town once a year. I have noticed that the WC dominates the 3500 - 5000 classes mostly with short tires.
AS for in the field, I remember Dad several times headed over to the neighbors to pull their farmall from the mud with his short tired WD. That tractor would plow through places the M wouldn't dare go. Not to say the WD wouldn't get stuck once in awhile. It just seemed to go through so much more than that M.
P.S. Both had narrow fronts.
