Assuming we are talking about a recently rebuilt engine? Be sure the fuel and cooling systems are in order, then... Rough time it, get it started, and keep it at a little above fast idle for 15-20 minutes to seat the cam/lifters. Set the timing to spec. For the next 10 hours of operation, don't run at steady speed for any length of time, don't work it, and whatever you do don't let it idle for any length of time either. Once the rings seat, and they should in 10 hours or less if you follow the above recommendations, change oil and filter and let her rip!
