As a former President and board member of a club I can tell you this. Yes, you can be sued, our club has an insurance policy or shield from that happening. During conversations with our lawyer this was mentioned. He did stress the GROSS negligence part. Accidents happen, and our hobby happens to be a very dangerous one. One saving grace on lawsuits is sueing a non-profit group is one of the biggest tabboo subjects that is in law suits. You have to realize that a jury of your peers is more likely to side with a regular person than a for profit corp. Gross negligence against a non-profit will be harder to get than a for profit corp. The jury knows this is a hobby, and thinks about themselves in the same situation.
Don't go overboard on getting excited. Do check out a limited liabiltity insurance policy for Officers and board ( our club pays it). Another thing, the less written rules the better. Acording to our insurance agent, if you have rules that are not enforced you expose yourself to liability. If a rule is not in place, it will be viewed differntly. Our club is manufacturing an alcohol problem at our show and wants to rule it to death. I say they will rule the club to death. Anouther thing to think about is it is a vollunteer thing, and if it is not fun anymore, help leaves. Just my 2 cents
