An article in the Seattle newspaper this morning on the Edmonton Police Dept. being in Seattle to recruit officers. You're not too old; Glasses are fine if corrected to 20/20; If you're looking at "20 and out", it may be a little disappointing, as pensions are not that great anymore in most jurisdictions; Most work an 8 hour shift (fireman do the 24 on/ 48 off thing because sleeping at the firehouse is part of the shift). Sheriff's deputies are required to live in the jurisdiction here, and they drive their cop cars home and park them in their driveway- I haven't heard of any harassment, most folks are happy to have them as neighbors, and the bad guys are generally afraid to have any more interaction than they have to. A retired Sheriff (elected) is a friend of mine, and I would have heard about harassment, I think.
I was an officer very briefly about 35 years ago, and have been on the Civil Service Commission that hires and fires deputies for about 10 years.
