I have painted many grain bins that have rusted. The best thing to use would be the cold galvanizing paint, but is expensive. I think the last time I got a price was over $50 a gallon. A cheaper product to use is from Diamond Vogel called non-fibered Aluminum Gilsonate based silver paint SKU# GH712-500. The Diamond Vogel store in Des Moines can get the paint I think the store in Marsalltown or Fort Dodge actually has it. This is the same paint that is used on metal roofs in the area. It comes in 5 gallon buckets and sells for $145.80 a bucket including tax. The good thing about this paint is that it can be sprayed thru an airless painter. Cold galvanized has to be brushed.
To paint a bin I first use a Makita grinder with a wire brush attachment to get the loose rust off. BE SURE TO USE GOGGLES OR EYE PROTECTION AND A MASK. I bought a Wagner Paint Crew airless painter to spray the paint. You will have to remove the filter in the wand because it will plug but don't worry about it. Next spray and done.
