The E4OD is a good transmission. We have one in an E 350 diesel cutaway that has over 300,000 miles on it. I'll try to remember what the problem was, but we thought the transmission needed rebuilding at about 250,000 miles and took it out and took it to a shop and the guy fixed it without charging much as it was a minor problem. My uncle had an issue with his 93 250 diesel with the same transmission and it was and inexpensive sensor. That truck is pushing 200,000 with no other problems. If it's not slipping and the fluid is not burnt looking/smelling there's probably a minor problem with it.
