On the production line, hydraulic valves are "lapped in" Machine made bodys are darn close to perfect, but not absolute perfect. Spools are measured and placed in pidgin holes, on the bench of a "fitter". They are grouped in catagories such as 1/4 thousand undersize, 1/2 thousand undersize, 1/4 thousand oversize, 1/2 thousandth oversize, etc. The fitter grabs a valve body and tries some spools till he finds one that is a very tight fit. Then it is lapped in with lapping compound to a smooth fit. the valve is then flushed, washed and assembled. That is why quality valve manufacturers can"t/won"t sell just a spool or valve body. Remember..the valve has to be leak free from just the metal to metal polished finish. If your valve is leaking internally, it"s time to replace the whole valve. ALSO..good filtration = longer life! Gresen is a very good quality valve. The process discribed above may not apply to a $59.95 wood splitter valve mfd. in a sweat shop in China.
