A field-grade officer who opened fire on his fellow soldiers? I think he will be dealt with quite harshly under the UCMJ. Anything less than capital punishment seems unlikely, and I don't think he'll get off with an insanity defense in a military court. I read that the US military hasn't actually executed anyone since 1961, but Maj. Hasan just might reverse that trend.
From what I understand, the policeman who shot Hasan handcuffed him before he realized he was still alive. I don't think I can fault the guy for not shooting a man in handcuffs.
