I would say considerable whining in reverse would be normal as those planetery gears are really spinning then. I think you would almost need to compare it to another or have someone familiar with the Case power shift give you a good answer. I know one thing, you never want to leave them in reverse for too extended a period of time like backing down that half mile drive way with a rear snow blower. Lubrication is not good in reverse. The lurching and snorting while clutching is normal as you are applying opposing clutch packs to stop trans shaft for shifting range transmission.
