I've had dell, toshiba, gateway, compaq, acer and a few others, never had i got more than a 1-1.5 years out of them before the hinges failed, motherboards cracked, batteries died, or generally fell apart.
Then i bucked up for a IBM R61, and its going on 2 years now and the battery last as long as every, screen is still attached (sturdy external aluminum hinges, no plastic) and it still is in generally good shape.
If any of my software and hardware worked with an Apple, and they were somewhat easy to find things for.... I might think for a second about trying one.
