I"ve never hear of the aluminium rod deal. In fact I don"t see how that could work since there would be no seal between the repair and the rod. What I do know works is solder. This trick was shown to me by an old machinist/welder who had been doing it for years on big cylinders on cranes, crushers, shears, etc. What you do is make sure the scratch is cleaned just as you would anything else you would solder. He usually used a "regular" solder like 50/50 or whatever to fill the scratch. Once it was filled higher than the surrounding material you file and sand it to shape. I"ve done it on several cylinders over the years and have always had good success with it.
