The important difference is: AWD has a center differential of some sort which allows "slip" between the the front drive train and rear drive train. ( just like the rear differential on a rear wheel drive allows for uneven rotation between the rear tires. The tire on the outside of a turn always travels farther than the tire on the inside) This makes it possible to drive on dry pavement with all 4 wheels "engaged". True, old fashoned 4WD does NOT have a center differential, and the total revolutions of the front drive train must equal the total revolutions of the rear drive train. No slip between the two. If you operate this system on non-slippery pavement you will "wind-up" and stress the drive train. PU trucks with light back ends will have a nasty tendency to "hop" as the lighter end trys to relieve this "wind-up" by breaking traction. True 4WD systems are ONLY to be used when the road is sufficiently slippery to allow a bit of slip (between tire and road) to even out the front/rear rotations.
