The older Case 1500-1700 series were indeed variable speed belt traction drive with two forward clutches and two reverse clutches and the pump was direct drive off the angle gearbox. The hydraulic variable speed sheave was somewhat of a problem as the units aged and cost to repair was excessive if good used can not be found. Occasional chaincase servicing was required for clutch adjustment and drive chain tension both to the main sprockets and the clutch sprockets. Personally I would look for a little later Hydrostatic unit. If bought in good condition and serviced properly you will be much more pleased with one of those both from a operational standpoint and durability. mEl
