Our growing seasons vary so much here (Western NY) from year to year that feed quality does also. Cold overcast weather such as we had this year will definitely lower nutritional value. Most progressive livestock producers (dairy included) will have samples of their forage sent in for analysis to know what to supplement their forage with. This issue not only exists with hay but corn harvested as silage. With margins as tight as they are you have to develope a complete nutrition plan and not chance whether your forage is or is not good enough.
