Not sure about your 231, on my 175 there is an auxiliary hydraulic pump, with a place on the side of the trans to tap in for an external valve. Mine doesn't have the valve, but on the advice of the service manager at my dealer, I plumbed in a filter to those fittings.
What color are the shavings, shiny steel, or more copper or bronze? The last time I had shavings in mine, it was because the PTO brake had been trashed. I now know that the brake is just to keep the shaft from rotating, it isn't meant to stop something like a bush hog.
