Leaving plugged in uses much more electricity. A typical tank heater does not shut off until coolant temp reaches 190 degrees F. Then, comes back on at 150 degrees F.
Not very hard to figure out. A typical 1500 watt heater will heat a tractor up enough in two hours when it's zero degrees F outside.
If you leave it plugged in all day and/or night, you're heating 3 gallons or more of coolant and keeping it at 150-190 degrees. A waste of power. And if the wind is blowing hard, even worse.
