I grew up in the late '30's and '40's at the end of the Great Depression. We didn't have an awful lot of cash money, but on the farm we were always able to grow or shoot enough to live fairly comfortably.
Not necessarily just at Christmas, my mother would frequently bake pies, cakes, or other goodies for people even worse off than we were, and have my sister and I hand deliver them. The look on the face, and "thank you" from people who maybe hadn't had a piece of pie in six months was priceless.
