I think this is one of those times when you really need to figure out how bad you need the thing. 5K sounds like an attractive figure to me if you were halfway sure of the rest of it. More than that... with an unknown cost to fix and you start getting into the territory where you could buy a 'good' tractor that would hold it's value rather than a pig that's worth little, even when running.
I know there's going to be someone say they had one and it was a great tractor, etc....... To me, it's attractiveness is cheap power. Best kept that way.
