Alternator

Group, I need help! There are many that know me and will agree with that statment! I purchased a 1950 John Deere MT tractor recently. It has been changed over to a 12 volt system and has a Delco alternator with a single wire charge system. I have no knowledge of this type system, or rather, use of the alternator in this mode. I have seen many in use but have never had need to question it. I went out this evening and just out of the blue decided to check the charging system. I conneted a volt meter to the battery. It read 11.7 volts. I started the engine and dropped slightly for a moment. Normal. But with the engine running it returned to 11.7 volts. This tells me the alternator is not putting out. The battery is in good condition though. Will someone please explain to me what changes are made within the alternator to be able to use it in a one wire mode. It is a Delco with built-in regulator.
