I take the filter out the top by moving it toward the radiator, then up and out in front of the big rubber hose. Not easy, but the hose flexes to get the filter out. With the filter mounted at an angle, you always spill some oil. I usually put a few paper towels under the filter before talking it off. I always take off the plastic shield under the motor to drain the oil.
I use Mann filters that I order from germanautoparts.com. They're better quality, and have a lug on the bottom that you can put a screwdriver across to loosen it. I order a half dozen filters once a year so I have one on hand when it's time. I always use synthetic valvoline. Used to use 5w-40, but last time I changed to 5w-30 because it's easier to find. Got 180k on my 2000 1.8L Passat, hoping to go past 200k before trading cars.
I put a timing belt in at 75k, and another at 140k as preventive maint., along with new water pumps.
