Do not know what kind of steel they use. Deere for the A series listed a replacement axle for use with the mounted corn picker but no way that I have found to identify them. I did run a 227 Mounted picker on a 51 A for years and took it slow on bumps. The axle under those situations would break at about in the outer bearing and not hurt the housing, Neighbor had a Deere A that the axle broke while cultivating corn with a 4 row front mount cultivator, just seen it from a distance of about a 1/8 mile and wheel was laying on ground. He had the wheel spacing wider for cultivating tho as he also had a mounted picker he used on it.
