I would bet money that the problem is electronic and not mechanical. Between what Toyota is stating, the mechanical pedal design, and customer statements it is highly unlikely that it is a mechanical failure. This morning on the news they showed a brand new '10 Camry that ran away into something (I can't remember) and a '09 or '10 Rav-4 that ran into a convenience store wall as the lady was hitting the brakes and 30 seconds later the President of Toyota said he was confident that this part fixed the problem. He said it was only on "higher mileage vehicles." My wife and I died laughing. Later today my wife was talking to her boss and she used to have a Lexus that had this problem. She said it seemed to have to do with cruise control. I am just waiting for the next reported case after all the vehicles have been "fixed."
