Ok GM type starter probably very close that what is used on say the 350 V-8s. Well the way they work is the soliniod has a electro magnet in it which pulls the bendex out to engage the flywheel. A bad bendex can in fact cause it to kick back like your is doing or a weak soliniod can also do the same thing or a combo of the 2. Only way to know if it is the bendex is to pull the starter and look at the teeth on it and if they are worn, or sort of bent looking then it is bad
