Poor 'little' cold, shivering raccoon was probably thinking ahead as to where to have the pups in few months so that next winter there can be more poor little shivering defenseless rabies carrying raccoons chewing into people's houses.
If the an animal lover would ever come upon a mother coon with her pups in the middle of the night, animal lover would quickly find out who the defenseless one is! Jim
