In North Dakota this "if you want it you can have it" happens to me often, usually from retired guys. I am always resprectful. If I want it I will take it home and get it operational. I ask the guy that gave it to me to come out to the farm and see it working , even let him drive the tractor if he wants to. Then I show him my operation and ask if he has any ideas about what I could do to improve things. When he goes home I send him with steaks from the latest steer. Now I get great advice from retired farmers that money can not buy, along with the occasional "do you want to rent my farm". Plus, I am nonresident farmer, having the local retired guys feeling invested in my farms, and what is going on with them is better security than the Sheriff can provide.
