The rabbit "gums" were so called because they were often made from a small hollow section of a black gum or other gum tree. It looked more natural. If you already have a live trap there is no need to build a trap. Oil the trigger mechanism and set it as hair trigger as possible, bait it with apples or carrots. I remember Daddy making a gum from a hollow tree section. I also remembe how good the fried rabbit tasted. When I was teaching school I offered a big extra credit for those who would make a model of a rabbit gum and several did.
