Hi Shawn, Rod bearings clearances can be loose due to bearing wear, crankshaft wear, and/or stretched or worn connecting rod bearing bores. Shimming rod bearings is not a proper repair. I know it's done, and most of the time it works out. I've done worse things myself. A shim behind the bearing will tighten it up, but it also increases the amount of interference or "crush" that exists between the bearing and rod. There is a small range of tolerance for this interference. If the bearing clearances are loose due to oversize rod bearing bore in the rod, the proper repair is to re-condition the rod, then use a bearing that results in the desired rod bearing clearance. If the rods are worn or stretched enough to need re-conditioning, you'll likely find the crankshaft also needs grinding. If you really wanting to "restore" your grandfathers tractor it's going to involve more than shimming the bearings to quiet it down. Any decent engine shop can measure your parts and do the machine work needed to get things right again. I'm pretty sure this isn't what you wanted to hear, but thinks are what they are, and I'm only the messenger...Al English
