Allis-Chalmers flattened exhaust pipes - A QUESTION ???

I was looking through an Allis Chalmers photo book that I just bought and I noticed that some of the exhaust pipes on some of them (they seem to be a 'straight pipe' with no muffler) are flattened at the end of the pipe, almost like the end on a vacumn cleaner hose for getting in tight places. Was there any particular reason for this design? Maybe there's less chance of rain getting in, who knows?
