ihmike2003, I think a longer bar would be more dangerous, you would be a little closer if the chain comes off. I was lucky I was cutting the headge when it came off, after it heated up and a branch flipped the chain off the bar, the other branches caught the chain and saved me a lot of hurt.
The saw blade is safer and easier on the back, but you MUST be carefull, and there is no one within 30ft of you. Do not cut 5" pine (it will do it) or you'll break the gear housing. Do not use a dull blade.
If you will be driving a tractor or car over the cut area try to cut flat not sharp on the up swing too hard on tires.
