Most metal preps have solvents that will break down the shellac. I would suggest throwing a chain or some else in the tank to act as an scrapper and shake-n-shake-bake. I used to big handfulls of lag bolts. I am sure the chain would be easier to get out. I would coat the tank with a liner after you are done. Just make sure it is clean.
