Can't say for sure but if they are carpenter ants they eat wood, and only wood. Carpenter ants are very large, black, and have a highly segmented body and large easily visible jaw. Boric acid (any drugstore) will work on most ants and is safe to people and pets. Don't know if it will work on carpenter ants but it gets rid of the smaller brown ants in a few days. Sprinkle it everywhere you see signs of the ants moving. They tend to make and use trails. Be generous with the stuff.
