I am in Texas and we have a severe problem with fire ants here also. I don't know how much land you are talking about. However, the best solution I have found is to broadcast Amdro over the whole area rather than try to treat individual mounds. If you are talking about 5 acres or less it is viable. Large acreage would be fairly costly. If I remember correctly, the instructions call for a 1 pound can broadcast per acre. You might check with a farm store to see if they have something similar in bulk for a lower price.
