Someone who prefers front or mid doesn't know how to use rear cultivators?? I'd like to see someone do it in MY sweet corn or potatoes when I plant close rows on side-hills. That includes Alan. Big rear mounts are probably fine and more productive on big open fields with perfect rows. But, not everybody has that luxury.
In tight places, front mount culitators work much better for me. No comparison. I cultitvate a lot on side-hills. Sometimes my tractor walks a bit sideways in front. No way around it. When I correct with rear cultivators? If the rows are narrow and tight, the rear swings way over and makes a mess. Rear mount, depending on how far, moves much more in relation to the tractor-front, as compared to a front or mid-mount.
Having cultivators on front by my feet works MUCH better. They don't move MORE then the tractor does, which is a big advantage, AND I can alway see what's going on without turning around.
Now, maybe if I had a 4WD tractor, things might work better with a rear-mount. But I don't own one, don't need one, and my front cultivators work great.
Besides using mid-mount cultivators on my Case VAC, I also have three dedicated cultivator tractors. Allis Chalmers G, Shaw R12, and a Bolens Ridemaster. Both great machines for tight work.
