Locally pole barns are not regulated by the building department. The poles are sunk to below the frost line and sometimes concrete is poured, often not.
The ones with well set posts don't uplift or settle nearly as much. The buildings keep nice roof lines.
That said, we have a 24 x 100 or so equipment shed with untreated poles set into clay till, no footings, hand dug holes maybe 2 feet deep. It was built at least 35 years ago by the previous owner, and just now I'm replacing posts (with treated!) and backfilling with tamped rock.
The building has survived 4 ft deep snow on the roof with rains that bowed the trusses and headers like crazy but lucky its still standing.
