Most inspectors in Central NY require 4' base of pole, a precast, or poured base for the pole. I used dry sacrete to bring every hole base to equal grade with all others and then laided two 4" solid concrete blocks side by side on the dry sacrete. Passed inspection every time. Also used my KX41 compact trackhoe to dig the holes so there was "wiggle room". Rocks and augers don't work, and a 12" augered hole gives you only .875sqft ground bearing area per post at best. Two 8"x16" solod blocks give you 1.78 sqft. plus the over cut of the hole filled to subgrade with dry sacrete. If you want to figure your total ground load, per pole, figure your total roof area X snow load/sqft. + total weight of materials divided by number of poles along the eve lines, and you will have the average weight that each of the poles are carring under max. conditions. The gable end poles carry little to no load as trusses carry all bearing weight to the upper plates on the side poles. I have had to pour 6'x8'x16" footings to "float" 60'X100' steel buildings in marginal soils.

As simple as a box plow appears, it can be rather challenging to make work correctly. In our sandy soils of Florida, traction is king. You can never have wide enough tires or heavy enough weights to get all the traction you want … unless you own a monster tractor. U
