A friend & I often go to farm auctions together. We are at a point in life where we both are looking for similar items of similar size, and good deals on tools & misc. So, we do not bid against each other. But, we kinda know what the other guy wants, and often the one along 'just to look' comes home with a misc. item - so we add to the sale, even if we do not bid against each other.

When my uncle sold out (lived next door), we were there bidding, all the neigbors were there bidding. We all looked around at each other.... What do you do? Bid against your neighbor? Have your uncle lose his shirt on the sale? Couple years later he sold his land. 3-4 neighbors asked for it, so he went public auction with it - too hard to pick one buyer. Anyone who showed up to bid had a chance. One neighbor did not - didn't want to bid against his neighbor.

Anyhow, in the end everyone seemed happy.

It can be difficult.
