Two wire/two insulated wire pumps have the starter switch built into the pump. Just a plain pressure switch to control operation. The more reliable three wire pump moves the starter switch up into a relay box mounted near the pressure switch. The three wire pump also allows varible speed control via Frankilin Mono Drive or Mono Drive XT. Instead of the pump pounding on and off while water is being used. The pump speed is varied during water demand. When demand slows to a dribble or stops. The pump stops and the system goes to standby similar to the old systems with a bladder tank. If the old pump has quit. You are on borrowed time just replacing a coupling etc. If you have to yank everything out. It's time to replace the motor, pump, wiring, hoses and pitless adapter. Or you will get to look at all these parts again real soon.
