Cub Lo-Boy 154 electrical issue

Ok, here it is. Battery has been going dead lately; it's just over a year old. Picked it up from my mom's house, had to jump it to start, noticed that it wasn't charging. Put battery on charger overnight, started fine but amp gauge was erratic, jumping up and down on "charge" side of gauge. Cleaned terminals and points in regulator. Then center wire(GEN lead) melted. Replaced it. Now amp gauge not working, needle at extreme left of gauge. Test light shows power on all 3 leads of regulator when running. Also runs with battery disconnected for a couple seconds, so I'm sure it's charging. What happened that caused the wire to melt? And did I fry the amp gauge? Or do I have another problem that I'm not seeing?

Opinions and suggestions welcome.
