In Christ's time everyone wore sandals, long robes, had long hair and beards when they worshiped. They hadn't bathed in weeks if even then! When I was a kid we wore our 'sunday best' to church because we wanted to look our best when we went to town to be in the public.
Marilyn has always claimed that some people dress in their best for church just to impress the congregation with their fancy clothing. They aren't impressing the 'one upstairs' at all but instead are merely being materialistic.
Turning people away at the door because of dress code tells me that particular church is more of a high classed social club with guards at the gate rather than god's house of worship.
