Rick, 1) Verify with a VOM that there is no current present between "R" and ground with the ignition "off". 2) Did you install an "idiot light" in series with the ignition switch & "R" terminal when you did the conversion? It's required. 3) If both 1 & 2 are OK, then you may have an internal short in the alternator. Any auto parts store can test it for you. 4) Assuming you have a 10SI, it is supposed to ground through the mounting brackets. Verify that you have a good ground with a continuity test. I doubt this is it but a bad ground can cause all sorts of problems. Look for rusty bolts, washers, painted brackets, poor negative cable connection to the block, etc. Don't let it get you down. When you finally find and fix it, you'll have accomplished something!
