I don't get what all the fuss is about.... Like you, if someone wants to supply their own parts, all the power to them. Just make note of it. I know of some shops around here that prefer some people supply their own parts... and some ~insist~ that certain individuals supply their own... if you get my drift. At least they're only out the labor if they don't get paid.
In practical terms tho there is no good reason for most people to buy their own parts. Most shops get parts at jobber rates which are probably 40% less than retail and they mark them up to retail... or what everyone else would pay. If I bought parts at jobber rate (and I have) and brought them to a shop to have them installed (I have because I was too busy at the time), then I would expect them to make up that margin in some form on the hourly rate or whatever. If anyone got smart about it and refused to do the work, or turned around and ordered their own stuff I probably wouldn't go back there just for spite.
