This is one of our bad tick years in MN. We didn't get as severe cold this winter as usual, so that may be why a much higher survival rate. Ticks love tall grass, and being in trees, especially oaks. They overwinter on the backs of deer, or any other warm blooded animal, including birds and ducks. We have a high incidence of Lyme Disease here in MN, and I have carried it for 25 years without being cured. It has definitely diminished the quality of my life, but I am still above the green grass, and hope to remain that way for another 25 years.
