First diesel I drove was in about '64- I was about 15 or 16. I worked for a neighbor, haying with an Allis D14 and a JD 40. Went over one day, boss had a bit of a twinkle in his eye- said "I parked the tractor up in the barn- why don't you run up and get it."
Walked in the barn, and there was a brand new shiny Oliver 550 diesel with Freeman loader. Prettiest thing I ever saw. Started it up, and was instantly hooked on diesel forever. Loved the smell, loved the sound, everything about it.
Drove it down to the house, and I don't know who had the wider grin, me or the boss. He told me later that the look on my face was worth the price, right there. He was the best boss anyone ever had, treated me like a son. RIP, Bob Thomsen.
