I live in Western NY and we only have snake weather maybe five months a year on average. We rely on the natural presence of skunks around here to control rodents. Generally see them other than the harshest parts of winter. Just saw one up close walking home from my parents last night. Did not see him till I was about three feet away. Kept walking at an even pace and it did not spray. My father always said the thing rats have to most fear of is a mother skunk with new offspring. Tenacious. By the way I prefer any snakes in the area to be down by the creek which generally is not a problem. Never seen anything larger than a garter up by the buildings here.
