If the total change in diameter is more than about .005" (.0025" step at the ridge) she should have sleeves, or bored (if it is a no sleeve engine) New rings would probably reduce the smoke, ___some___. If it is at .010" it won't help, the rings move in and out so much per stroke they just pump oil. Ridge reaming, and ball honing is always needed if you put in new rings. Jim
