I show(contract only) Dexter's and and just like any type of cattle they have there strong and weak points. Most of the Dexter people leave the horns on and the cow or bull KNOWS they got'em and how to use them(some love to try to get you in the groyne but most don't.) If handled from when they are calf's they are real nice pleasant animals to be around.(GET THEM DE HORNED!!!!!) Birth weights are any where from 40-60 lbs. They do kick faster than a normal sized cow and you got to be quick to get out of the way(trust me, when one gets you in the shin the first time, you'll understand what I mean.) I use to have a Dexter show bull, that I went grand champion with at the Houston live stock show & Rodeo in 2006. He was a nice bull, very tame(he would walk up to visit people and loved molasses flavored horse treats) but I sold him a year ago to a Dexter ranch near Austin. They handle much like any other cow when working them in pens, but they can jump really good and WILL go under things if they can( a low running hot wire will stop this. All in all, they are at least worth trying ,so go for it, I think you'll find it fun. Oh, and you can use the milk tho make butter and whipped cream, besides the meat. If you are interested I might be able to find a Dexter Ranch near you to visit(being a Dexter Association member). Alex
